ENG8: Workbook exercises

Dear students, this is the last English lesson that you have to do through distance learning.

Workbook 149/1: Complete the gaps by using Present Perfect (HAVE/HAS + 3RD FORM OF THE VERB).

Workbook 150/2a, 2b, 3: Read the instructions carefully, look at the examples and do the exercises. Use the dictionary if you have to.

See you soon!

Friday, 29th May 2020

Check the workbook exercise on 3 R’s here: TJA8-2805CHECK

ENG8: Have you ever…? – Si že kdaj…?

We’re starting with a new unit today. I plan to do a revision of the 3rd Unit a bit later when we see each other at school.

You are going to write about your life experiences. You already know that we have to use the Present Perfect Tense when we talk about experiences.

Do you still remember the formula for the Present Perfect? HAVE/HAS + 3rd form of the verb

Open your notebook and write the title EXPERIENCES – IZKUŠNJE.

Open your book on page 147. I will now use Slovene language so that you will all understand me…

I have already…

Če nečesa še nisi naredil, boš napisal:

I have never…

Primer:

1) I have already written a poem. (Pesem sem že napisal.)

2) I have never driven a tractor. (Nikoli še nisem vozil traktorja.)

Povedi piši eno pod drugo in jih ne krajšaj! Na koncu jih boš imel 20.

OPOMNIK!! Tisti, ki morate popravljati negativno oceno, mi do danes oddajte preverjanje!!!

Have a great weekend, see you on Thursday!

ENG8: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Have you heard about the 3 R’s? All eco-friendly people know them  – the 3 R’s mean REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.

Watch a video about the 3 R’s first:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVomCztm52I

Now open the book on page 136 and carefully read the text. Then answer the questions on the next page.

Enjoy!

ENG8: Reading comprehension – bralno razumevanje

You will do some reading today. And what makes it more interesting is that you get to choose what you want to read.

First decide on the text that interests you (see the list below). Read it and underline the unknown words. Check the words in the dictionary. Then read the text again and do the following reading comprehension.

Texts you can choose from are:

1) Workbook 133: Student’s School Chores

2) Workbook 134: Studying Abroad

3) Workbook 135: Scouting

4) Workbook 138: Canoe Safari

Enjoy!

ENG8: Are zoos good or bad?

PROS AND CONS = ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES = razlogi za in proti

Here are some pros and cons of zoos. Use the subtitles (podnapisi) to help you understand English better. Watch and think:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DlBJlahU1g

Now watch one of the two videos below.

This one is much more interesting, with a bit more difficult language:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irS_5-eVFUo

This one has easy English, but it isn’t as interesting as the video above:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1M1haw8KRk

You have heard a lot about the positive and negative sides of zoos (= pros and cons of zoos).

Your task today is to write about the pros and cons of zoos. You can make a chart or write a composition where you discuss the good and bad points of zoos.

You can also use a book (page 129/C) for some ideas.

Send me the picture of your notebook.

Enjoy the weekend!

ENG8: Endangered Animals

You were searching for the volnurable, endangered and critically endangered animals yesterday.

None of those animals live in Slovenia (except at the ZOO). Today, you will do some research. You will search for endangered Slovenian animals.

Write a title in your notebook ENDANGERED ANIMALS IN SLOVENIA – OGROŽENE ŽIVALI V SLOVENIJI.

Use the books, the magazines, the Internet, etc. to make a list of endangered animals in Slovenia. You have to mention why each animal is endangered and what should people do to protect it.

Find at least 8 animals!

Send me the picture of your notebook!

Thursday, 14th May 2020

Here are Tuesday’s answers about the endangered animals: TJA8-1205CHECK

ENG8: Endangered Animals

Copy and translate these words:

– endangered animals

– vulnerable animals

– extinct animals

– extinction

Read about the endangered animals here:

https://www.ducksters.com/animals/endangered_animals.php

Now you know that some of the animals are critically endangered, some have the status of being endangered and some are only vulnerable.

If we don’t help and protect the vulnerable and endangered animals, they can become critically endangered. And if we don’t help critically endangered animals, they can become extinct.

Your task today is to find out how endangered the animals below are. You have to find the animals on the list of endangered animals here (there are 2 pages!):

https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/directory?direction=asc&page=2&sort=extinction_status

When you find a certain animal, check its CONSERVATION STATUS and put it in a suitable place in the chart.

Your chart should look like this:

VULNERABLE ANIMALS ENDANGERED ANIMALS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED ANIMALS

These are the animals that you have to find on the list and organize:

GIANT PANDA HIPPO CHIMPANZEE TIGER
INDIAN/ASIAN ELEPHANT WHALE RED PANDA POLAR BEAR
BLUEFIN TUNA GREAT WHITE SHARK BLACK RHINO SNOW LEOPARD
MOUNTAIN GORILLA ORANGUTAN WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA SEA LIONS

Then look at the book 124/3b, choose 2 topics and write at least 5 things we SHOULD or SHOULDN’T do to save the forests, water, air or energy.

Example:

SAVE WATER SAVE ENERGY

We shouldn’t throw rubbish into rivers.

We should take showers, not baths.

We shouldn’t waste (= trošiti) electricity.

…..

IF ENGLISH IS HARD FOR YOU, DO THIS EXERCISE:

V zvezek napiši SAVE THE NATURE – VARUJMO NARAVO

V učbeniku na strani 124 si pri nalogi 3a (drugi del naloge) izberi 8 iztočnic ter jih v obliki povedi (tako da spredaj napišeš WE SHOULD ali WE SHOULDN’T) zapiši v zvezek. Povedi moraš tudi prevesti.

ENG8: Present Perfect

I have found a lovely song on the Internet which was actually written to help students learn the Present Perfect. If you listen to it more than once the structure of the Present Perfect will stick in your head. The song is about EXPERIENCES (Do you still remember? We use the Present Perfect when we talk about experiences.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pcJSmLzn1w

Here are some clips where the Present Perfect is used. You probably know some of the films or shows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUIJ9pBDlHs

And now the exercise that you have to do. The following video (more like a Power Point) will ask you about your experiences. It’s very common to start a question with HAVE YOU EVER… when you want to ask about experiences. (Have you ever…? = Ali si že kdaj…?)

What’s your task? You will hear 20 questions, but the verb will be missing. You have to write the proper verbs down in your notebook. Number the verbs from 1 to 20. Good luck!

Tuesday, 7th April 2020

Here are the answers from Thursday’s work. It’s important that you check them! If your answers are not correct, study the Present Perfect Tense in your notebook one more time! TJA8-0204CHECK

ENG8: Present Perfect

You have learned how to form the Present Perfect Tense. Let’s revise by answering these questions (orally=ustno):

  1. What’s the auxiliary verb (=pomožni glagol)?
  2. In which form is the main verb?
  3. When do we use Present Perfect – explain all 3 uses and give an example for each use!
  4. What’s the difference between these two sentences:

Tim learned French for 6 years. / Tim has learned French for 6 years.

  1. Put this sentence in the negative and question form: Nicoletta has packed her suitcases.

Book 111/7: One of the uses of the Present Perfect is when something happened in the past and the result is seen in the present. Check the pictures (before and after) and write what has happened (the title is What has happened? – Kaj se je zgodilo?).

Here is a song about Present Perfect. You must listen to it, you will hear the theory and the examples and it’s quite funny, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8XYAmT8iDU

That’s it for today. Send me the picture of your notebook, because I want to see whether you know how to use the new tense.

Have a great day! I miss you!

PS: Are you also stuck indoors like this guy? Read the lyrics. Hilarious! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5azNpTwVk8

Thursday, 2nd April 2020

Before we start, check your work from last time here: TJA8-3103CHECK

ENG8: Present Perfect

Odpri zvezek in napiši naslov PRESENT PERFECT. Prepiši spodnje besedilo (vse do nalog v DZ).

Present Perfect tvorimo tako, da uporabimo pomožni glagol HAVE/HAS in 3. obliko glagola (če je pravilen, mu dodamo končnico –ed).

HAVE/HAS  +  past participle (-ed)

Kdaj ga uporabljamo?

  1. Kadar govorimo o izkušnjah (EXPERIENCES)

Primer: I`ve been to London. (= I have been to London.) I‘ve seen a shark. Neil Armstrong has walked on the moon.

  1. Kadar se je nekaj zgodilo v preteklosti in so posledice vidne v sedanjosti (STH. HAPPENED IN THE PAST, BUT THE RESULT IS SEEN IN THE PRESENT)

Primer: I‘ve broken my leg. (Result: My leg is in plaster, I can’t ski.) I‘ve lost my keys. (Result: I can’t enter my house.) He has had a car accident. (Result: His car is smashed.) Nicoletta has washed the dishes. (Result: The dishes are clean.)

  1. Nekaj, kar se je začelo v preteklosti in še vedno traja (STH. HAPPENED IN THE PAST & STILL GOES ON)

Primer: I`ve lived in Planina for 40 years. (I still live in Planina.)

Primerjaj!

Tim lived in London for 10 years. vs. Tim has lived in London for 10 years.

+ I have seen a tiger. Nejc has been to London.
I haven’t seen a tiger. (HAVEN’T = HAVE NOT) Nejc hasn’t been to London. (HASN’T = HAS NOT)
? Have I seen a tiger? Has Nejc been to London?

Delovni zvezek 109/22, 23: Preveri, če ti gre.

Oglej si razlago Present Perfecta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1_0Gz4uRKo

ENG8: Have you done the hoovering yet?

Če si prejšnjič delal vaje v DZ, si tule poglej rešitve: TJA8-2703CHECK

Life of an au pair can be hard. Some host parents can be too demanding and can treat you like a slave. Unfortunately this also happened to Nicoletta. Let’s read what she did.

Book 108/1: Read and listen to the text here: https://touchstone.si/audio/ts8/108_Have_you_done_the_hoovering_yet.mp3

Book 109/2: Write the title HAVE YOU DONE THE HOOVERING YET? in your notebook. Now write what Nicoletta has done and what she hasn’t done. Begin each sentence with NICOLETTA HAS… or NICOLETTA HASN’T…

Example:

  1. Nicoletta HAS MADE the beds.
  2. Nicoletta HASN’T MADE the beds properly.

Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Q0Zy9mdkU

When you finish, write down a short composition (150 words) about the video. Write about these things:

-shortly describe what Agnes does as an au pair (the chores in her day)

-negative things about being an au pair (in your opinion)

-positive things of being an au pair.

When you finish, send me the text. If it’s possible, write it on the computer, it would be easier to correct!

ENG8: Nicoletta Rossi

Before you start, check your work from last time here: TJA8-2403CHECK

Today you will learn a bit more about Nicoletta Rossi and her host family. Do you still remember Nicoletta?

She’s that Italian girl who is working as an au pair in Britain. (AU PAIR = a foreign person, usually a young woman, who lives with a family in order to learn their language and who takes care of the children or cleans the house in return for meals, a room, and a small payment).

Book 104/4a: You will listen to Nicoletta talking about herself and her host family. Put a tick next to all the info she says about herself, Timothy, Lucy and the host parents. It’s not difficult, but you have to listen AT LEAST TWICE. The recording is here: https://touchstone.si/audio/ts8/104_Listen.mp3

Now that the chart is complete, you will write sentences about Nicoletta and all of the family members. You have to use all the information from the chart. Write a title in your notebook A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN AU PAIR.

Begin like this: Nicoletta is 18 years old and she comes from Florence, Italy. Now she is working as an au pair with a family called Harrison. In the morning she helps Mrs Harrison prepare…

TJA8: Doing the chores

First check your work from yesterday here: TJA8-1903CHECK

This English lesson is going to last for the whole weekend.

You’ll be doing something useful. Since we are all stuck at home with more or less enough free time, you will choose 5 house chores that you will do. The chores should last more than 5 minutes (so making your bed is out of question;).

There’s a trick here. All of the chores should be done either for or instead of someone else. So if your dad always washes the car, wash it instead of him. If your brother empties the dishwasher, empty it instead of him (OK, you can let him know that it’s not because you love him but because your English teacher has forced you to do it;).

When you are done with all 5 chores, write to me (kgodesa@gmail.com)! Tell me which chores you did, who was the person you helped, how did that person feel… And if it’s possible…send me a picture or two of you doing those chores – as proof and because I miss you!

Here are some ideas:

You can cook lunch or dinner, you can help your younger brother/sister with school work, you can wash your family’s car, you can clean the kitchen, water the flowers…

Enjoy!
